Ferrari started on the right foot this weekend in Azerbaijan, leading free practice after good performance of the revised car.
Friday’s free practices at the Baku circuit in Azerbaijan were marked by several incidents. The first session was canceled after just 10 minutes of running, when a manhole cover loosened under George Russell’s car, damaging the cover and the vehicle. For security reasons the FIA canceled the actions in the morning to check all the caps on the circuit. In the second session several drivers got involved in accidents causing red flags, like Lance Stroll and Daniil Kvyat, while several others made smaller mistakes and touched the walls of the tight Asian circuit.
Ultimately Ferrari was the fastest, with Charles Leclerc in 1st and Sebastian Vettel just behind. The Italian team tested several modifications in their cars, trying to reduce the gap to Mercedes. Toro Rosso and Mclaren surprised to lead the second pack easily, while Haas and Renault suffered to find the best pace.
The pace of the teams, however, has to be taken with caution. As is customary on street circuits, the drivers need time on the track to gain confidence and fully explore the limits. The real scenario will only be revealed during Qualifying this Saturday.
